Chrysler

The story of Chrysler must begin with Maxwell the true beginning of the roller coaster we know as Chrysler. Jonathan Maxwell built his first car in 1903 a comparatively instant success. But things started looking bleak for Maxwell, as they did for many small Auto Manufactures, mostly due to the extreme monopolistic competition of the growing, General Motors. Benjamin Briscoe, Maxwell's backer, countered the rising giant by forming the United States Motor Company in direct competition with GM. But a couple of GM's investors bought into the United States Motor Company and it failed by 1913 taking with it many of the early Auto Makers. But in a weird quirk of fate Maxwell survived, purchased by Walter Flanders. Maxwell again flourished, only to falter again by 1920. Walter Chrysler, then Vice President of GM stepped in at the request of a reorganizing committee. Three years later saw the first Chrysler Motor Car. Within a single year Maxwell built and sold 32,000 Chryslers. By 1925 Maxwell reorganized as the Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler has long been an innovator, always bold enough to take that first step in new technology, and in new design. Unfortunately new is risky, and Chrysler has almost failed several times throughout history due to mistakes in risk taking, mistakes like the Chrysler Airflow, focusing on engineering during the 50's and 60's when everyone else was focusing on flash, or the decision to expand into Europe during the recession of the 70's. Sometimes we wonder how Chrysler has managed to survive at all, but then we remember the beautiful Chrysler Imperial of the early years; the Hemi (my father use to say his would never pass a gas station, but it would sure get there awfully fast); and with the Hemi the birth of the Barracuda, and The Little Red Wagon and the list goes on right up to todays Prowler. Innovation truly is a double edged sword.

Women have long played an intricate role in Chryslers advertising, appearing in Chrysler Ads as early as 1902, but Ranny had a particular interest in the Nude Female, as he chose both a clothed and a disrobed female as the logo for his stock. Why he chose the Nude Female over the Eagle after his falling out with Sam Smith..., well I bet you won't find that answer in an American History Book!
