Dodge, two of the true pioneers of the Auto Industry, indeed cars would not be as common today if it were not for the Dodge Brothers, as before Dodge, cars were only a toy for the rich. In the early days of the Automobile cars were at best cantankerous, repairs and adjustments were just part of the drive. Hence the Mechanics Seat, a single seat typically positioned outside of the cab as the Mechanic was a Servant, necessary to keep the car rolling, but certainly not of a status to ride with his employers. This seat teasingly became known as the Motherinlaw seat. Dependability was NOT something anyone would think of when describing any car, Dodge put dependability in the car, and dependability is what made the automobile popular instead of just prestigious. Indeed the word Dependability was coined by Theodore McManus, to describe the Dodge, in other words, the word Dependability was not even a word before it was needed to describe the Dodge.
The Dodge Brothers were third generation Machinest delivering inarguably, quality to the Auto Industry. Horace Dodge invented the Dust Proof Bearing in 1887, their first invention in making machines more dependable, making machines last longer. The Brothers hence built their first Dodge based on this dependable, long lasting bearing, a bicycle. But, it would be decades before another vehicle would wear the Dodge name. Beginning as but common Laborers, the Dodge Brothers worked and saved untill they opened their own Machine Shop, the beginning of one serious success.
The Dodge Brothers became that serious player in the Auto Industry when they contracted to build the Drivetrain for Oldsmobile. In truth it was once said that every car built could be traced back to one of two Detroit Machine Shops, Dodge or Leland. Both were quite notable. Then the pivotal point in the history of the Dodges, one day when the biggest looser in the Auto Industry approached the Dodge Brothers, a man with a reputation to stay away form, a man known best for Bankrupting not one, but several Automobile Companys; this man approached the Dodge brothers with the ideal of building an inexpensive car that everyone could afford, and the goal of putting a car in every home; that three time looser was Henry Ford. The Dodge Brothers were the success that behind Ford. Instead of just another Banker, Ford landed himself backers that had a knack for improvements that continued to make machines more dependable. Couple Dodges dependable machines with Henrys knack for saving costs, (My Uncle Van, a close friend of Henry, use to say that Henry Ford could squeeze a penny so hard as to make Lincoln shed a tear) and you can understand why Henry Ford is often credited with the birth of the Auto Industry [sic]. Ford and the Dodges made cars useful and affordable.
Henry Fords vision coupled with the Dodge Brothers Dependability certainly made for one of the more lucrative ventures in the Auto Industry and in Automotive History, but it would only last for a little over a decade before mounting arguments grew to an end. It was the Ford Model T, built by Dodge, where the Dodge Brothers continual push for improvements, eventually conflicted with Fords desire to build the car cheaper, those continued improvements would be what would bare the Dodge Brothers production of their own badge, and bore the end of the Ford Dodge Alliance, a separation that would be equally as lucrative as was their partnership. Equally as lucrative.
To say Dodge was a success would be an understatement, but it was short lived due to the untimely deaths of both brothers to the Spanish Flu. Had the Dodge Brothers lived, I believe Chevrolet and thus GM would have never got the foothold they got, but that was part of Durants opportunity. The Dodge Brothers passing was not good but if ever any man were to doubt a woman, a widow, now was not the time. It was unheard of for a woman to run a business in the 20's, but the Dodge Widows not only ran the company, Dodge Profited equally under the Widows for another half a decade. The widows did indeed sell Dodge, but for one hundred and forty six million dollars, better then double of what Dodge was worth when the Dodge Brothers were still alive. Consider that they sold Dodge for that during a time in history when a penny had more buying power then a dollar does today. The Dodge Brothers took ten thousand dollars (their investment in Ford) and turned it into twenty five million all in about a decade, took that twenty five million and turned it into sixty million (with their own car) within about another decade, then the Dodge Widows increased it to one hundred and sixty four million. Keep in mind that the Dodge Brothers had to start out as just common laborers, as their Father had long lost their Grandfathers Machine Shop. This author is not often impressed by money, but is impressed when so much money is made by honest, good hard working people.
Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928 from the investment bankers who had profited poorly from Dodge, greed is never worth as much as hard work, and this is one time such was proven. Today Dodge lives on still under the Chrysler badge, yet producing some unique and desirable cars, Chrysler, just like the Dodges, not afraid to embrace new technology.
The Dodge Girl isn't only Nude Girls on a Dodge, but Dodge actually made a collectible Hulla Girl Lamp, called the Dodge Girl. The Dodge Girl was Topless wearing nothing other than a Grass Skirt, giving her owner flashes of her nicely shaped bottom end and even more as she danced. And. one can not over look the bare breast that appeared above the Dodge Crest in the 40's. The casual nude was by far not taboo in the original Dodge Brothers Ads, the Dodges having been a rowdy lot in the first place. And, from the time after Chrysler bought Dodge, Dodge Ads have featured women who didn't commonly conform, probably due in part to the Widows who didn't do the Lady Like thing and just sell their Estate in grief. Women in Dodge Ads are often more modern then was commonly acceptable, even to the point of being racy or a bit naughty. Subtle or not Dodge was marked to the Liberal Woman, a car that has always said, I'm not willing to be normal, nor even complacent.
