Impala, New for 1958, the Chevrolet Impala. Chevrolet had just released the Bascane, the BelAir and made such a big deal over each of them in turn, so why the Impala? Why, because it was new, and GM wanted you to be excited about buying a new car. It was in the days of serious competition, the BIG 3, the oligopoly did not exist yet, but was forming. In the 50's there were still 9 or so major car companies, Nash, Hudson, Kaiser, Packard, Studebaker, Willis, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors. Competition was real, to say nothing of the resent AntiTrust and resultant Presidential Pardon, of GM buying up all public transportation and closing it down so you had to buy a car. And GM already had their hand in successfully closing one car company with the litigation nightmare afforded the Tucker, the Tucker that forced the entire industry to change to a lower sleeker look dominant through the 50's. Forced to change GM was now gunning for everyone, making change the weapon that almost no one would keep up with. By the introduction of the Impala, Packard had already fell in an unsuccessful merger with Studebaker. Hudson and Nash would be a little more successful with their merger forming AMC. Indeed the constant change was taking it's tole. People came to love new cars eagerly awaiting the new model years, and the new models, and Impala was just that, another new fantastic automobile; more lights, more chrome, more comfort, more options, more power, Impala a very popular success for GM.
