Most know that Mercedes, was named after a girl, and some even know that it was Mercedes's father whom named the car in her honer. Fewer even may know Mercedes fathers name was Emil Jelinek. Romantics might say that Emil so Loved his Daughter that he designed and produced one of the Worlds most successful automobiles in her honer. Nothing could be further from the truth. Emil Jelinek may have Loved his Daughter, Mercedes, but Emil Jelinek neither designed nor produced an automobile, at least not in the beginning. No Emil Jelinek wanted a New Car Dealership to sell Daimlers, only Daimlers were already licensed in France to someone else which prevented Emil from selling them. So Emil Jelinek named his dealership after his Daughter, likewise renaming all the Daimlers he sold to Mercedes. Indeed Jelinek was so successful at selling Mercedes that Daimler themselves would later rename "all" their cars Mercedes. Emil Jelinek went on to serve on Daimlers Board, and even to effect the design of one performance engine, but Emil Jelinek would be a part of Daimler for only a short time, the legacy of his Daughters name Mercedes is still with us over a hundred years later.

Daimler produced their first car in 1886. When the first Mercedes was sold is vague, but by 1901 Daimler built the first official Mercedes, and by 1902 adopted Mercedes as the name for all their cars, keeping Daimler only for commercial vehicles.
