Hot Rod, the origins of the term Hot Rod are much older then the Automobile, slang for Gunfighter and short for a Hot Head with a Rod, Rod being Slang for Gun, or sometimes Hot Rod meaning a Fast or Hired Gun. In the early days of Souping Up, or Customizing your car, more formally your Automobile, it was said that you Dyked up your Auto, the same as if you got all Dyked up with that new fancy suit to go out for a night on the town, or for that fancy dinner ball. Promoting the Dyking up of your Automobile was of course AL Dyke Automotive, the Mail Order House for all of those neat gadgets that you may want if you had an Automobile in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. But Dyke was taking on a new meaning around the teens and 20's, as a slang term for Lesbian, or more so the male persona of the Lesbian relationship; by that time you certainly did not want to say you owned a Dyked Car, No, No Way! Hot Rod, became one of many new slang terms that applied to the altered car, or more exactly referred to the driver who would do that to a car, Hot Rod suggesting, like it's Hot Headed Gunfighter roots, a Crazy Boy. After the Wars, especially after the Second World War, those who lived, those who came home needed an out; some went to drinking, some jumping off of mountains, some to Hot Rodding. When you have been shot, watched your friends die, you need an out, something to get your mind off of it, and that something usually has to be dangerous, and the early days of Hot Rodding was most certainly dangerous. Hot Rodding was an out.
By the early 50's the War was long gone, but Hot Rodding was not, In deed this once Crazy Boy trait now found itself formalized and officiated by one Wally Parks in the forming of the NHRA, National Hot Rod Association. The NHRA gave one common set of rules for the competition of Hot Rods known as the Drag Race (hm, does Drag have anything to do with Dyke). Today a Dragster is what you race on the Drag Strip, and a Hot Rod is more what you build to go to Custom Car Shows, or Cruise In's.
